Jackson (1BR35) 1976-1978

Summary

The Jackson site, 1BR35, is primarily a large historic Lower Creek village with minor prehistoric components. The Jackson site was first recorded in 1959 by Harold Huscher and was excavated in 1960-1961 by David L. DeJarnette and a field crew from the University of Alabama. During that time he documented excavation of three burials. In 2000, “Brockington technicians documented a minimum of four individuals, 6 associated funerary objects, and no unassociated funerary objects.” Although these artifacts and human remains are currently documented as being housed at the Laboratory of Human Osteology at the University of Alabama and the David DeJarnette Laboratory of Archaeology in Moundville, Alabama (Atz, Huddleston & Sweeney 2000), there is a possibility that the artifacts from Jackson (1BR35) 1976-1978 are NAGPRA-related, and were therefore treated as such.

Two reports written by Frank T. Schnell in 1976 are included in the archives for the Jackson (1BR35) 1976-1978 investigation: A Cultural Resource Appraisal of Certain Portions of “Old Creek Town Park”, Eufala, Alabama and Recommendations and Preliminary Report on Investigations of Certain Portions of Old Town Creek Park Eufala, Alabama. The first was written in March of that year and included a preliminary resource appraisal which indicated a need to investigate two areas. The second phase, conducted in September and October of that year, was a survey of these areas with some surface collection and auger testing. It was determined then that the cultural resources present would not need further protection, but that further attention might be paid to the western end of the right-of-way. Incidentally, many of the artifacts from 1977 and 1978 are listed as coming from the north of the road bed or from the surface. Because it appears that work was done over a long period of time by the same Principal Investigator and the report produced in 1976 was a preliminary one, the artifacts in the Jackson (1BR35) 1976-1978 collection were determined to be part of the same investigative effort (Schnell 1976).
