Test Excavations at Twenty-Eight Sites 1989-1990

Summary

In 1989, USACE, Kansas City District contracted with Commonwealth Cultural Resources Group (CCRG) to conduct Phase II testing at known sites on the Harry S. Truman Reservoir in Benton, Henry, Hickory, and St. Clair counties, Missouri (Contract No. DACW41-89-C-0102). At least two sites faced impacts from planned recreational development, and all the sites were to be evaluated for eligibility for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. The original contract listed 26 sites for investigation, but through various modifications, two sites were removed (23HI482 and 23HI483) and four were added (23BE1042, 23HE259, 23HE260, and 23HI479), thus creating the final list of 28 sites mentioned in the report title. In addition, field personnel identified three previously reported sites (23HI568—23HI570), while attempting to relocate sites 23HI479 and 23HI480 (Roper 1992, p7-1 – 7-4). Although the newly identified sites were not included in the contract or report title, the investigation contains archaeological materials from 23HI568 and 23HI570. Therefore, a total of 30 archaeological sites are included in the investigation.

Excavations, which began in the fall of 1989 and continued intermittently through December 1990, were directed by Dr. Donna Roper, principal investigator, and Marlin F. Hawley, field director. Prior to the completion of artifact analysis and report preparation, both Dr. Roper and Mr. Hawley had left CCRG. Dr. Roper completed the report as an independent researcher. For more information on this project, see the draft report (Roper 1992).

Within each site, shovel tests and 1 x 1 meter excavation units were placed according to a grid, which was tied to a datum point. Each test was divided into arbitrary vertical levels that were measured relative to the datum. Each level was assigned a field serial (FS) number and recorded, even when variations in surface topography left no actual ground to excavate. Levels that terminated above the existing ground surface were designated “Air Zones,” and the assigned FS numbers are not associated with artifacts.
