Blue Springs Lake Project 1983-1985

Summary

This collection is referred to as “Blue Springs Lake Project 1983–1985.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, file folders, and box labels. The extent of this collection is seventeen (17) linear inches.

The documents in this investigation include paper and photographic documents categorized as Field, Analysis, and Report Records. The Field Records include field notebooks, feature forms with hand drawn feature maps, and unit and block level summary forms. Photographic materials, such as negatives, proofs, slides, and prints, with associated photographic record logs are also present within this series. Flotation data forms, discarded, unworked stone data sheets, and projectile point and chipped stone tool lists are included within the Analysis Records Series. The final report for this investigation is the sole document comprising the Report Records Series.

The original condition of the contents of this investigation was assessed as good. Although the majority of the field documents, including notebooks and level and summary forms, and flotation analysis forms were soiled, water stained, or otherwise minimally damaged, the remaining documents were received in good shape. The soiled documents were dirt stained and had a negligible amount of rodent chewing and tears. Surface dirt was removed from these records using a document cleaning sponge, Absorene, or erasers. Tears were mended with mending tissue, while tape was removed using a heated spatula. Any folds in the documents were flattened using a bone tool.

Special care was taken with processing of the photographic materials. These materials, including negatives, proofs, and prints, were stored in, or attached to, onion skin sleeves that were placed inside a manila envelope. Slides were originally housed within polypropylene sleeves with handwritten descriptions on each film mount. The negatives, slides, proofs, and prints were first cleaned with PEC-12 before being rehoused into polypropylene sleeves. Of particular note was the presence of acidic tape on the attached proofs. Most of this tape was left intact so as not to damage the integrity of this material. The original photographic manila envelopes were also cleaned, while the onion skin paper was discarded. The envelopes were integrated into the collection and rehoused into polypropylene bags to preserve the catalog number, image descriptions, and date typed on the envelopes.

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include select archival photographs and artifact photographs, artifact database, artifact report, finding aid, original investigation report, photographic material database, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional archival and artifact photographs, box labels, document folder listing, initial data collection, notes, photographic material labels, and records removal sheet. For additional information on these materials, refer to the finding aid.
