Pavao-Zuckerman Fusihatchee Fauna

Summary

This project consists of zooarchaeological remains from the ancestral Muscogee-Creek site of Fusihatchee, identified at the University of Georgia. The data formed the basis of Barnet Pavao-Zuckerman's 2001 Dissertation.

Site:

The Ancestral Creek and Creek town of Fusihatchee (1EE191) is located on the Tallapoosa River in Alabama, and has both precolonial and colonial period occupations, allowing for diachronic analysis. These components include the Late Woodland (A.D. 1050-1250), Protohistoric (A.D. 1600-1717), Historic (A.D. 1717-1814) and Late Historic (A.D. 1814-1836).

• Barnet Pavao-Zuckerman is the data creator and contact for this project.

• Nicole Mathwich, a graduate assistant at the University of Arizona, created the Access database and digitized reports and scans in 2015.

• Andrew Webster, a graduate assistant at the University of Maryland, compiled the resources for this project and uploaded everything to tDAR in 2018.

Data:

Data included on this tDAR project consist of an Access database of the zooarchaeological data from Fusihatchee (1EE191), associated coding sheets, and scans of the original paper data entry cards where the data was originally recorded.

• Pavao-Zuckerman 2007, "Deerskins and Domesticates" is an American Antiquity article based on Pavao-Zuckerman's 2001 Dissertation.

• The Pavao-Zuckerman 2001 Dissertation, "Culture Contact and Subsistence Change at Fusihatchee" is the result of the final analysis of the faunal data reported earlier in Pavao-Zuckerman 2000 and the reports from Pavao, Weinard, and Reitz 1999 and Reitz 1997.

• Pavao-Zuckerman 2000, "Vertebrate Subsistence in the Mississippian-Historic Transition" includes preliminary research from Fusihatchee that was finalized in the Pavao-Zuckerman 2001 Dissertation. It is the result of further analysis of the faunal data reported in the reports from Pavao, Weinard, and Reitz 1999 and Reitz 1997. • Pavao, Weinand, and Reitz 1999, "Changes in Animal Use through Time at Fusihatchee (1EE191)" is the second faunal report from the Fusihatchee site. It includes more material from more time periods than Reitz 1997, including the Late Woodland and Late Historic periods. It also includes more material from the Protohistoric and historic periods. Both Pavao, Weinard, and Reitz 1999 and Reitz 1997 are faunal reports based on data recovered from excavations reported in Waselkov, Cottier, and Sheldon 1990 site report.

• Reitz 1997, "Vertebrate Fauna from Fusihatchee (1EE191)" is the first faunal report from the site, covering remains from two Protohistoric structures. Both Pavao, Weinard, and Reitz 1999 and Reitz 1997 are faunal reports based on data recovered from excavations reported in Waselkov, Cottier, and Sheldon 1990 site report.

• Waselkov, Cottier, and Sheldon 1990, "Archaeological Excavations at the Early Historic Creek Indian Town of Fusihatchee (Phase 1, 1988-1989)" is the site report prepared for the NSF for the Fusihatchee site (1EE191), where the zooarchaeological remains included in this data were originally excavated.
