Upper Yazoo Project 3A-2
Summary
The first step in the rehousing process is to obtain copies of cultural resource reports, artifact catalog sheets, and field notes pertaining to the collections from the St. Louis District archivist processing the document collection. The analytical techniques employed by each organization to recover and process the collections were reviewed to gain familiarity with the archaeological work that had been conducted on the sites. Archival material sent along with this investigative effort included the final report, an artifact catalog, and a 3.5-inch computer disk containing the original artifact catalog and a list of field specimen (FS) numbers and their corresponding provenience information.
The Upper Yazoo Project consisted of a Phase I survey and a Phase II testing performed in Leflore and Holmes counties, Mississippi. Fieldwork was undertaken in response to proposed levee construction, including the associated borrow areas, along the Yazoo River. Eleven loci, one site, and one isolated find were recorded during the investigation. Of the eleven loci only the following yield artifacts: 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, and 10. Artifacts were also collected in areas “between” or “near” loci. For example, FS 9 was found “between loci 5&6” and FS 11 was found “near locus 6.” The site, 22LF686 (Eagle Lake site) was immediately tested for subsurface archaeological remains. Dr. R. Christopher Goodwin of the R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates cultural resource management firm served as the principal investigator, while William P. Athens served as project manager. Stephen Hinks and James M. Wojtala acted as field supervisors. Fieldwork was conducted during February and March 1990.
The investigation conducted consisted mainly of intensive pedestrian surveys; however, sub-soil investigations were conducted. A total of 826 shovel tests were excavated during the project, and six 1-x-1-meter test excavation units were completed.
