Rena Lara Landside Berm

Summary

The USACE, Vicksburg District contracted with Coastal Environments, Inc. (CEI) to conduct an intensive survey of the area around Sunflower Landing that would be affected by the construction of the Rena Lara berm in Coahoma County, Mississippi. The survey was conducted between May 22 and 29, 1985. Richard A. Weinstein served as principle investigator. It was during this time that the 16 sites were discovered: Cypress Brake (22CO704), Forked Ridge (22CO705), Eubanks (22CO706), Sheep Pen (22CO707), Watts (22CO708), Big Eddy Lake I (22CO709), Buck Bayou I (22CO710), Big Eddy Lake II (22CO711), Buck Bayou II (22CO712), Sunflower Landing (22CO713), Burnett (22CO714), Little Eddy Lake (22CO715), Borrow Pit House (22CO716), Green Grove Support (22CO717), Little Eddy Field (22CO718), and Little Eddy House (22CO719). The artifact assemblage consists of historic as well as prehistoric material. Portions of two of these sites were investigated by magnetometer. Three of the 16 sites were considered to be significant in terms of eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places: Sunflower Landing, Little Eddy Lake, and Little Eddy House sites.
