Archaeological Excavations in the Round Bottom Area 1973-1975

Summary

This collection is referred to as “Archaeological Excavations in the Round Bottom Area, 1973-1975.” This name is consistent throughout the finding aid, the file folders, and the box labels. The extent of this collection is two and a half (2.5) linear inches.

The documents date from 1973 to 1975. The documents were originally lacking a clear discernible order. The documents were originally housed in an acidic folder within an acid-free box with various document collections from the Huntington District. The documents were generally in good condition, though metal contaminants, tears, pressure sensitive tape, and folds were found throughout the documents. The metal contaminants were removed, tears were mended with acid-free tissue mending tape, some of the pressure sensitive tape was removed USACE- Pittsburgh District Archaeological Excavations in the Round Bottom Area 1973-1975 Bettye J. Broyles, Principal Investigator 2 with a hot tool, and folds were smoothed using a bone tool. An attempt was made to remove additional acidic tape from the draft reports, including a camera-ready copy that contained photographic prints and figures, but this attempt was halted, as there was potential of removing original text or damaging the photographic materials and drafts. The decision was made to leave the photographic prints in situ in the camera-ready copy of the report, and the pages with the prints were placed in Mylar sleeves to protect surrounding documents.

An oversized map of sites within the Round Bottom Area was originally inserted into the archaeological report detailing sites in the Hannibal Locks and Dam, scanned asset 2068-0004. The oversized map was removed from the original document and scanned. A copy of the map was printed on acid-free paper and inserted into the original location within the document. The oversized map was assigned to the same folder as the remaining background records (2/1), removed to oversized storage, and assigned a scanned asset number for tracking purposes. The digital copy of the map was inserted into the investigation’s digital records. The oversized map consists of two pieces of paper originally held together with pressure sensitive tape. The tape was removed and replaced with acid-free tissue mending tape to maintain the original format of the document.

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the finding aid, map, original investigation report, oversized material spreadsheet, and scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include archaeological reports, archives database, proposals, and other investigation reports. For additional information on these materials, refer to the finding aid.
