Stonewall Jackson Reservoir Archaeological Investigation 1974

Summary

The Stonewall Jackson Reservoir Archaeological Investigation was conducted under the National Park Service contract number CX-4000-4-0037 from June to August of 1974. The primary purpose for this archaeological survey was to investigate cultural resources prior to construction of the proposed Stonewall Jackson Dam, a combination flood control and recreation project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pittsburgh District (Beckes 1975) located in north-central West Virginia. The work was conducted by the Archeology Section of the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey under the direction of principal investigator, Michael Beckes. The report states that there are twelve sites that were investigated, including nine which were previously reported by Ralph Solecki (1949), and three which were recorded by the 1974 field crew; however, only eleven sites were listed in the report (46LE1, 46LE2, 46LE5-46LE7, 46LE9, 46LE13, 46LE14, 46LE20-46LE22). Additionally, site numbers 46LE3, 46LE10, and 46LE12 are referenced in Figure 1 of the final report but they are not included in the discussion of the investigation. Artifacts were only collected from the nine sites listed above.

The digital materials in this collection were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include archival photographs, an artifact catalog, an artifact report, artifact photographs, a original investigation report, an over-sized material spreadsheet, a photographic material spread sheet, and a scanned asset key. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include artifact photographs, archival photographs, a budget document, correspondences, feature records, maps, memorandums, notes, photographs, photo logs, a preliminary archaeological survey, print records, a project document, references, site survey records, and a time sheet. For additional information on these materials, refer to the finding aid.
