Archaeological Recovery and Analysis of an Indian Dugout Canoe (Site 22 WS 776) Discovered in the Bank of Steele Bayou Swan Lake Washington County Mississippi

Summary

The first step in the rehousing process is to obtain copies of cultural resource reports, artifact catalog sheets, and field notes pertaining to the collections from the St. Louis District archivist processing the archival collection. The analytical techniques employed by each organization to recover and process the collections were reviewed to gain familiarity with the investigative effort. This investigation had a final report and copies of the artifact catalog and field notes.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Vicksburg District contracted with Coastal Environments, Inc. (CEI) to excavate a dugout canoe (22WS776) from the banks of Steele Bayou at Swan Lake, Washington County, Mississippi. The canoe was found protruding from the bank during complex dredging operations in August 1989. If it were not removed, the canoe would be destroyed by the dredging project or by natural drying processes. Fieldwork took place between the September 5 and 9, 1989. Dr. Charles E. Pearson served as principal investigator and Richard S. Fuller was the field director and report author.

The canoe was determined to be from the late Mississippian period, dating between A.D. 1500 and 1600. After excavation the canoe was taken to the Yazoo National Wildlife Refuge headquarters for study and preservation. For more information on this project, see the final report (Fuller 1992).
