Sonai Rockshelter excavations

Summary

Sonai Rockshelter is located at 1125 m altitude, in semi-open Acacia savanna approaching the slopes of Mt. Oldeani in the Lake Eyasi basin, ca. 4 km from the lake (which sits at ca. 1000 m asl). It has been used by Hadza hunter-gatherers repeatedly in recent years. It was excavated by M. Prendergast, A. Mabulla and M. Domínguez-Rodrigo in 2005-2006 and was sampled for OSL dating by Z. Jacobs and R. Roberts in 2007. Data presented here include radiocarbon dates and faunal remains from Level I (mid- to late Holocene, LSA through Iron Age).
