IDENTIFICATION OF CHARCOAL FROM THE ELBEE VILLAGE SITE (32ME408), NORTH DAKOTA (2011)

Charcoal from the fill of a basin-shaped hearth at the Elbee Village site (32ME408) was submitted for identification. This hearth was exposed in an erosional cutbank of the Knife River and contained an abundance of charcoal. The Elbee site is an extensive earthlodge village in west-central North Dakota dating to the A.D. 1500s. The hearth was found away from and stratigraphically below the level of the village and might reflect an earlier occupation of the area.

A stratigraphic column collected from 32ME847 was examined for pollen to provide a record of prehistoric vegetation in the vicinity of this site. Interpretations of paleoenvironmental conditions are made from the record of vegetation. Middle Archaic, Late Archaic, Woodland, and Late Prehistoric archaeological manifestations were noted at this site.

Eight pollen and four macrofloral samples were examined from two sites overlooking the modern Skunk Bay, an area formerly occupied by Skunk Creek, a tributary of the Missouri River in North Dakota. Fill from a fire hearth at Fort Mandan in North Dakota was submitted for archaeobotanic examination. Pollen, phytolith, and macrofloral analyses were conducted to identify any foods that might have been processed in this fire hearth. In addition, charcoal was examined both from the macrofloral sample and from charcoal picked out of feature fill in the field.
