Six soil samples from site 48SW4381 were submitted from Western Wyoming College for flotation and macrofloral analysis to study subsistence at this site. These samples were taken from the fills of six features at the site in an effort to identify any plants that may have been utilized.

Samples from the fill of four hearth features at site 48SU4435 in southwestern Wyoming were floated to recover macrofloral remains. This site is a prehistoric camp containing hearth features, lithic debris, fire-cracked rock, and bone fragments. Macrofloral analysis is used to provide information concerning plant resources that might have been processed in the hearths and woods burned as fuel.

Fill from a hearth at site 48SW16684 in southwestern Wyoming was submitted for organic residue analysis. The Second Look Site (48SU 1565) is an Early Paleoindian open occupation site situated on the prairie in southwestern Wyoming. The site appears to have functioned as a butchering locale. Pollen samples were collected from two depths within an excavation unit in an attempt to define local vegetation at the time of occupation.

Seven samples from hearth and posthole fill at the Shadow Site (48SW11618) in southwestern Wyoming were examined for pollen. The samples represent a Late Uinta Phase Prehistoric component, and radiocarbon testing of charcoal from Feature 1 returned a 2-sigma calibrated date of 1300 to 1170 B.P. (Beta-208787).

Three samples were collected from a slab-lined hearth (48SU1032) and a pithouse and hearth (48SU1066) for pollen analysis. Pollen analysis at these two sites was designed to assess pollen preservation and identify, if possible, subsistence activities.

Seventeen pollen and a single botanic sample were submitted for analysis from the Stone Ball Site (48SW11666). Seven pollen samples represent hearth fills, six samples represent the cultural level and ash/rock middens, and four samples represent washes of rock slabs used as lining for slab-lined hearths. Site 48SW550 represents three occupations during the Late Prehistoric Uinta Phase. Four features from the lowest two occupations were examined for their pollen and macrofloral remains to address questions of subsistence. These features are all shallow basin pits containing charcoal and a few rocks. Interpretation of probable economic activities that might be associated with these features rests largely on the archaeobotanic record.

Pollen and macrofloral analyses were conducted at 48SWI023 and 48SW1612 to identify paleoenvironmental conditions at the time of occupation, as well as to determine whether evidence exists for subsistence activities involving plants. Stratigraphic columns were collected from the present ground surface to the lowest occupation or one stratum below at each site to provide data to interpret paleoenvironmental conditions.
