This is an abstract from the session entitled "Post-medieval Archaeology and Pollution", at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology. Glass production is and was an industry that exhausts natural resources. The destruction of forests surrounding early post-medieval glassworks in Europe was a given - the glassworks would often simply move to the next spot after depleting their resource of fuel and potash. The extraction of sand also had an environmental impact. The...
Environmental Threats To Viking Age and Medieval Norse Sites in Southwestern Greenland (2019)
This is an abstract from the "Accelerating Environmental Change Threats to Cultural Heritage: Serious Challenges, Promising Responses" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. This presentation is one of the products of a series of ongoing inter-connected, international, interdisciplinary fieldwork projects coordinated by the North Atlantic Biocultural Organization (NABO) research cooperative since 2005 in Greenland. The projects drew upon more than a...
Environmental Variation and the Sustainability of Farms: Investigating Effects of Erosion in Northern Iceland (2018)
The initial colonization of Iceland in the late 9th century had a profound impact on the fragile environment of the North Atlantic island. Settlement and the introduction of livestock resulted in widespread erosion and the replacement of woodlands with meadows and heaths. Changes in the environment are assumed to have played a role in determining settlement patterning and subsistence strategies. While marginal highland areas were most seriously affected, resulting in farmstead abandonment, the...
ESR Dating Herbivore Teeth within the Mousterian Layers at Šalitrena Pećina, Serbia (2019)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2019: General Sessions" session, at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Overlooking the Ribnica River near Breždje in the Dinaric Mountains, central Serbia, Šalitrena Pećina records a continuous Late Pleistocene sedimentary sequence records over the Middle/Upper Paleolithic (MP/UP) transition. In the cave entrance, six sediment layers reach ~ 1.5 m thick. Layer 2's Neolithic artefacts overlie Layers 3-4's Gravettian artefacts. ...
ESR Dating Ungulate Tooth Enamel from the Mousterian Layers at Pešturina, Serbia (2017)
In southern Serbia, Pešturina contains three Mousterian layers, with late Pleistocene faunae. The site overlooks a tributary to the Nišava River southwest of Niš near the Sičeva Gorge. In all three sedimentological layers, the large mammalian faunae suggest a mixed environment with temperate forest, rocky cliffs, and steppe within walking distance from the cave. Fragmentation patterns and butchering marks plus the lithic tools indicate that some faunal remains were human kills. A...

European and North American Mountain Archaeology and the Concept of Transhumance Applied to the Prehistory of Colorado’s Southern Rocky and Poland’s Tatra Mountains (2018)
Significant advancements have been made in mountain archaeology throughout the world in recent decades. A central and rapidly expanding research theme has been that of seasonal transhumance, movement of human groups between lower to higher mountain-foothills-piedmont environmental zones in order exploit annual economic resource variability. Emerging European mountain records suggest human transhumance, based in seasonal variability of both economic plants, migratory game species, and, much...

Evaluating Socio-economic Status at Maasplein, Using Food Utility Indices (2017)
A number of researchers have inferred socioeconomic status using zooarchaeological data in contexts suggested by artifacts to reflect a particular status level. Cuts of meat that are of relatively high yield ("utility") should be more economically valuable than low yield parts. A model of carcass-part utility assumes that people of high socioeconomic status will preferentially acquire greater relative frequencies of high yield parts than people of low status. The model is applied to the Roman...
An evaluation of preservation, sex, and age using cremains weight and volume from a Bronze Age cemetery in Hungary (2017)
In well-preserved osteoarchaeological samples, numerous anthropological methods are employed to determine age at death, biological sex, diet, and pathologies. However, with cremated human bone (cremains), determining demographic information is complicated by fragmentation and post-depositional damage. A simple way to assess variability in demographics, taphonomy, and burial treatment in cremains is to measure total bone weight and volume, which can then be examined in light of sex, age-at-death,...
Every Year Is Getting Shorter, Never Seem to Find the Time: Evidence for a Fourth-Millennium Gap in Southeastern Europe (2023)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2023: Individual Abstracts" session, at the 88th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Prior to the surge in radiocarbon dating over the last 15 years, the culture chronologies of Southeastern Europe were organized neatly in sequential centuries-long blocks for the fifth and fourth millennia. Recent research, however, has completely upended the traditional chronologies. With increased research and scholarship on the Copper Age / Chalcolithic...

An examination of changing Copper and Bronze Age trade networks in the Körös River Valley, Southeast Hungary (2017)
Metal is a unique raw material which societies in some parts of southeastern Europe have been exploiting since the Middle Neolithic (5500/5400-5000/4900 BCE). As previous studies in various parts of the world suggest, the acquisition and circulation of metal objects, as well as the ability to work metal have been important in the development of prehistoric societies. In our study, we compared the distribution of metal artifacts during the Hungarian Copper Age (4500/4400-2800/2700 BCE) and Bronze...
Examining Sedimentation Rates, Find Densities, Raw Material Economies and Technological Solutions in Paleolithic Contexts (2017)
This paper examines low density Paleolithic sites from several geological contexts within a diachronic framework. The case studies consider what unifying elements and differences exist in Lower, Middle and Upper Paleolithic contexts and addresses their causes with regard to the nature of sedimentation, raw material availability and technological needs. Where preservation permits links will be made between assemblages of lithic, faunal and botanical artifacts at the contexts studied to help...
Experimental Archaeology as a Method to Replicate the Ornaments of the Arma Veirana Burial: Overview of the Ongoing Experiments (2021)
This is an abstract from the "SAA 2021: General Sessions" session, at the 86th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. The discovery of an Early Mesolithic (10,000–9000 cal BP) newborn buried in Arma Veirana Cave (Erli, Italy) is very important both for the rarity of prehistoric newborn burials and for the richness and diversity of its grave goods. Those are composed of 84 perforated *Columbella rustica and four perforated *Glycymeris sp. with different levels of use-wear. Our...

Experimental Reconstructed Vinča Gradac Phase Copper Smelting (2018)
Recent dating projects have determined the oldest known date for copper smelting to appear around, 5000 BCE, associated with Vinča (Gradac phase) sites in the Morava Valley, Serbia. Recent Studies of Vinča metallurgy (Radivojevic 2010) were directed towards the characterisation of slags and associated minerals, and their provenance. This body of work has had important implications for theories relating to the beginnings of metal-using communities. Despite this important research, few studies...
