MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS OF HEARTH FILL AT SITE 5ST303, COLORADO (1997)

Fill from a hearth at Site 5ST303 in Summit County, Colorado, was floated to recover macrofloral remains. A calibrated AMS radiocarbon date of AD 1650 to 1950 was returned for material from the hearth. Macrofloral analysis is used to determine possible plant resources processed in the feature.

Two high altitude sites in Summit and Lake Counties (SSTl14 and SLK372) were examined for their pollen content in connection with archaeological mitigation. These sites were sampled stratigraphically in an effort to define paleoenvironmental changes in this area. Unfortunately, the soil deposition was relatively shallow at both sites, thus compacting the relatively long time sequences and yielding few pollen samples.
