Brockington and Associates, Inc., undertook testing investigations at 38CH463, 38CH1774, 38CH1775, and 38CH1777 on the Grimball Farms Tract in January - March 2004. We recommend sites 38CH463 and 38CH1777 not eligible for the NRHP. We recommend sites 38CH1774 and 38CH1775 eligible for the NRHP. Nine combination pollen and phytolith samples were examined from a variety of contexts from a late 18th and early 19th century plantation in Charleston County, South Carolina. Suspected garden plantings, garden parterres, an interior brick wall, thought to represent a walled garden or a retainer for compost, as well as a wall trench from an African American slave house were examined.

Four pollen and phytolith samples were examined from shell pits at 38CH1693. This site yielded four radiocarbon ages that indicate occupation between approximately 3720 ± 50 or 60 BP and 3930 ± 50 BP. A fifth phytolith sample was examined from a roasting pit at this site. These analyses were conducted to examine the microscopic record for prehistoric vegetation and potential uses of these pits.
