Archaeological excavation at the Crescent Shelter has spanned several decades. Cultural components noted extend from the Late Paleoindian to the Woodland and include the Altithermal period. The site lies along the hogback valley near Deer Creek. The site's location along the hogbacks, as well as its stratigraphy representing occupation from Paleoindian through Woodland made it a desirable location to examine the paleoenvironmental record for the Front Range of Colorado.
