The Heller Lake site is located within the Ashley National Forest near the headwaters of Dry Gulch Creek. The lake is located on the south slopes of the Uinta Range, between the Uintah and Ouray Indian reservation and the High Uintas wilderness, at an elevation of 9400'. The sampling site is located in an alpine moraine plant community within the western montane biome.
