This Class I cultural resources literature was undertaken in support of the development of an environmental impact statement by the Bureau of Reclamation, Phoenix Area Office and the New Mexico Interstate Stream Commission.

A former agricultural field system identified on the outskirts of Picuris Pueblo contains many terraces, grids, and other rock alignments. Some features may have been constructed as early as the thirteenth century CE. Ceramics recovered suggest most of the area investigated was used between 1500 and 1700 CE. Aztec Ruins National Monument is the largest ancestral Puebloan community in the Animas River Valley.
