Summary

The Extensive Literature Search provides an environmental summary of the Waimanalo Valley and Bellows AFS, a detailed history of the Bellows Beach Site (Site 018) and a description of all known previous archaeological work conducted at Bellows AFS and at the adjoining Waimanalo Bay State Recreation Area. This work includes descriptions of archaeological field projects and data analyses; reports on these projects are described in greater detail in Appendix A (Annotated Bibliography).

In addition, a detailed land history has been compiled for the Bellows AFS area and the Waimanalo Bay area by Historical Researcher, Carol L. Silva. The information is presented in Appendix B and is highlighted in the section entitled Summary of Land Use.

The Research Design section has been developed, based on information gathered during the Extensive Literature Search, and on the schedule for development. The design identifies objectives to be met during the field inventory, specifies areas targeted for investigation, suggests research topics to be investigated (based on data from previous investigations), and outlines the means for achieving these goals.
