Summary

Stratigraphic pollen and phytolith samples were examined from site 05-16-

54-19/106 in Anderson Valley, California. These analyses were conducted to

identify vegetation communities and assess the paleoenvironmental record. The

Mi-wok are believed to have burned the understory to encourage growth of a

particular kind of grass. Cbmbined pollen and phytolith analyses of these

stratigraphic samples was designed to identify any manipulation of the vegetation

crorniunities.
