STRATIGRAPHIC PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS AT 35-JE-51B, NORTHERN OREGON

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1993

Summary

Phytolith samples were examined from three columns at 35-JE-51B to

establish a pattern of expected phytolith recovery from non-feature areas and to

examine any changes in vegetation in pre-Mazama and post-Mazama times through the

phytolith record. Strata examined represent a paleosol probably representing a

lengthy period of formation prior to the Mount Mazama eruption and two columns

comprised of post-Mazama deposition. One sample from each of these columns

appears to have been associated with a house feature. The bases of the post-

Mazama columns appears to date to approximately 5,000 BP and 1,000 to 2,000 BP.
