POLLEN, PHYTOLITH, AND MACROFLORAL ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES FROM UNAI CHULU, TINIAN ISLAND

Author(s): Linda Scott Cummings; Kathryn Puseman

Year: 1995

Summary

Samples from two columns at Unai Chulu (White Beach 2) on Tinian Island

were examined for pollen and phytoliths. Fill from features and from units in

the various strata at the site also were sampled for macrofloral remains. This

site appears to have been extensively occupied over a long period of time, with

radiocarbon dates ranging from about BC 1530 - AD 380. Pollen, phytolith, and

macrofloral analyses are used to provide information concerning prehistoric

vegetation and possibly subsistence.
