PROTEIN RESIDUE ANALYSIS OF PROJECTILE POINTS FROM SITES 13WD1 01, IOWA, AND 39CL09, SOUTH DAKOTA, AND POLLEN/PHYTOLITH ANALYSIS OF CALCIUM CARBONATE ON THE PROJECTILE POINT FROM 13WD101

Author(s): Kathryn Puseman; Linda Scott Cummings

Year: 1999

Summary

A Clovis projectile point from Site 13WD101 in Sioux City, Iowa, was analyzed for possible protein residues. This projectile point had a calcium carbonate encrustation that was removed prior to protein residue analysis and was examined for pollen to identify any pollen and/or phytoliths that might represent vegetation at the time the calcium carbonates formed on the tool. A small reworked Clovis or Goshen projectile point from Site 39CL09 in Vermillion, South Dakota, also was tested for possible protein residues. Protein residue analysis is used to provide information concerning animal resources hunted with these artifacts.
