Hayden Flour Mill: Landscape, Economy, and Community Diversity in Tempe, Arizona, Volume 1: Introduction, Historical Research, and Historic Architecture
Author(s): Victoria D. Vargas; Thomas Jones; Scott Solliday; Don W. Ryden
Year: 2008
Summary
This document, the first volume of a series of reports created by Archaeological Consulting Services, covers the restoration and preservation of the Hayden Flour Mill; voluntarily undertaken by the City of Tempe. This project surfaced in recognition of the importance of the Hayden Flour Mill and its resources, a desire for its complete documentation, and the development of recommendations for preservation priorities. The City decided to have the cultural resources investigation completed prior to turning the property over to a developer. As revitilization and development efforts move forward, the City recognizes that important first steps in the process must include informed historic preservation planning to retain those historic qualities that lend Tempe its sense of place and history. Toward those goals, the City made it a priority to recover important historic information, reserve significant cultural resources, and develop historic and prehistoric resources for purposes of public interpretation and heritage tourism.
