Summary

This report presents the results of a Phase I cultural resources survey and archaeological inventory of 1,334.6 ac (540.9 ha) on Avon Park Air Force Range in Polk and Highlands counties, Florida, and the results of Phase II documentation, investigation, and National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility determination of five archaeological sites. The Phase I survey resulted in the discovery of three archaeological sites (8HG1107, 8HG1108, 8PO7011) and five isolated archaeological occurrences, none of which are eligible for inclusion in theNRHP. The Phase II investigations were undertaken at two previously identified sites (the Seaboard Airline Railway, 8HG1095/8PO6785, and the Keen Dip Vat, 8PO994) and three previously undocumented cattle dip vats (8HG1110, 8HG1111, and 8PO7050). Based on current investigations, one of the dip vat sites (8PO994) is recommended eligible for NRHP inclusion. The three other dip vat sites (8HG1110, 8HG1111, and 8PO7050) are recommended not eligible for NRHP inclusion. Portions of the Seaboard Airline Railway and associated tramline (sites 8HG1095/8PO6785) retain high levels of integrity and are NRHP eligible under multiple criteria. The remainder of the tramline has been compromised to varying degrees and does not retain sufficient integrity to be eligible for NRHP inclusion.
