A Pre-Base History of Randolph Air Force Base in the Cibolo Valley, Texas, 1690-1928

Summary

This pre-base history describes the area of the Cibolo Valley, Texas where the Randolph Air Force Base is located. Influenced by the development of the city of San Antonio (approximately 18 miles to the southwest), the land was crossed by Spanish explorers, by herders who supplied the Spanish missions, by travelers along the Camino Real, and by speculators in Mexican land grants and Texas land claims. Intense use occurred around the middle of the nineteenth century, first by ranchers, and, finally, by the many German immigrant farmers who built homes and grew crops between the 1860s and 1928. Physical evidence of these uses has been all but obliterated due to the clearing and leveling of the land and the construction of the base.
