Pre-Construction Archaeological Survey for New Recreational Lodging at Bellows Air Force Station

Summary

A pre-construction archaeological resources survey was conducted by T S. Dye & Colleagues, Archaeologists, Inc. at the proposed location of the New Recreational Lodging project at Bellows Air Force Station, Waimānalo, O'ahu. The survey was carried out in two phases. During the first phase, nine backhoe trenches excavated in the proposed leach field revealed two buried cultural layers containing numerous small pit features, seven of which were dated to the traditional Hawaiian period. The 7 backhoe trenches excavated within the abandoned runway within the area of the proposed lodges exposed a single pit feature and a paleosol, but no cultural layers.

During the second phase, eight backhoe trenches excavated in the proposed leach field revealed buried traditional Hawaiian cultural layers containing two fire-pit features, both of which were dated to the traditional Hawaiian period. The eight backhoe trenches excavated within the abandoned runway within the area of the proposed lodges exposed a paleosol, but no cultural deposits or features. The proposed installation of leach field facilities will have an adverse affect on the important information on traditional Hawaiian history and prehistory within site 50-80-15-4856. Development of lodges on the runway will not have an adverse affect on significant historic properties, although the identification of a pit feature in the deposits immediately west of the runway suggests that other pit features might be located west of the runway.
