Draft Report of New River- Agua Fria Underground Storage and Recovery Project: Bird Strike Hazard Evaluation for the Glendale Municipal Airport

Author(s): United Research Services (URS)

Year: 2001

Summary

Salt River Project (SRP) is currently planning the construction of an underground water storage and recovery facility in the West Salt River Groundwater Basin north of Phoenix, Arizona (Figure 1). The project site is at the confluence of the Agua Fria and New Rivers between Indian School Road and Camelback Road in Glendale Arizona (Figure 2). The current plan calls for the development of 4-6 recharge basins of approximately 100 acres in total surface area. Water depth will not exceed two feet and the maximum recharge capacity is expected to be approximately 100,000 acre-feet/year. The basins will be constructed from river material. They are designed to give way in a major flood event. An open delivery channel bringing water from SRP’s Grand Canal terminus, located approximately 1.5 miles from the project site will supply the storage/recharge facility. The channel will be excavated in the riverbed and will be approximately 10 feet wide.

The south end of the runway system at the Glendale Municipal Airport (GMA) lies approximately 1 mile north of the proposed project site. Because of the proximity to GMA, it is prudent to examine the potential impacts to airport operations by the construction and operation of the water storage and recovery facility. This report examines the potential of the recharge basins creating a bird/aircraft collision hazard by attracting wild birds to the basins.
