Author(s): Mark R. Hackbarth

Year: 1998

Summary

This report describes an archaeological data recovery effort conducted by Northland Research, Inc, for the City of Mesa. The project area was located within the construction site of a sound barrier wall along the north and south sides of McKellips Road in Sections 2 and 11, T1N, R5E. The purpose of the investigation was to locate and record historic and prehistoric features, specifically canals, that crossed the McKellips Road Sound Barrier project area. Northland recorded four canals and collected artifacts, soil, pollen, ostracode, and chronometric samples. The features were recorded as part of AZ U:9:180(ASM), which comprises canals recorded previously in the vicinity. This report incorporates three new canals into this site, which documents a consistent pattern of canal construction along the Mesa Terrace escarpment.
