An Archaeological Curation-Needs Assessment for the U.S. Navy, Engineering Field Activity, Chesapeake Division

Summary

At the direction of Headquarters, Naval Facilities Engineering Command, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Louis District conducted a survey, during the period February 1995 to September 1996, of archaeological collections recovered from eight U.S. Navy Engineering Field Activity, Chesapeake Division, facilities. Specifically, the research focused on properties In Maryland (U.S. Naval Academy; Naval Training Facility, Bainbridge; Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division; Naval Communications Detachment, Cheltenham; Naval Surface Warfare Center, Indian Head Division; and Naval Air Warfare Center, Patuxent Division) and Virginia (Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division, and Marine Corps Base, Quantico). In sum, 281 ft3 of archaeological materials and 17 linear feet of associated records from these facilities are curated in 13 repositories. All collections require at least partial rehabilitation to comply with 36 CFR Part 79.
