Summary

Northland Research, Inc. has completed a Class III cultural resources inventory and evaluation of areas of potential impact associated with the proposed Horseshoe Dam modifications. This survey project was designated Task 13 of the Supplemental Surveys of the Regulatory Storage Division, Central Arizona Project (Plan 6). It was conducted under Contract No. 7-CS-3-05750 issued by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation. The project area is located entirely within the Tonto National Forest, Cave Creek Ranger District, in extreme northern Maricopa County, Arizona. It is adjacent to, and southwest of, Horseshoe Dam and Reservoir, located along the lower Verde River. Because the project is on Forest lands, the survey was performed under a U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service Special Use Permit. This permit was issued specifically for the Plan 6 projects on 9 April 1988. The survey project was conducted by a crew of four from 11 through 19 December 1989. Approximately 1,600 acres were surveyed. Fifty-three sites were recorded in this area, including 35 that had been previously recorded.
