A Cultural Resources Survey of the Divide-Cut Section, Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, Divide-Cut Section Archaeological Survey 1974-1976

Summary

This paper constitutes the final report of a cultural resources survey which was carried out within the confines of the acquisition area of the Divide-Cut Section of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in northeastern Mississippi.

The direction of the survey, with respect to the actual field techniques which were employed, was partially structured by contractual agreements with the Corps of Engineers through their agent, the National Park Service, Southeastern Region. Two points of that agreement are germaine to the development of this report: (1) the survey would proceed from north to south along the proposed Waterway route and (2) an interim report would be submitted covering the northern-most eight miles of the survey area.

Similar agreements are quite common in cultural resources survey contracts and normally pose no problems. Such is not the case here, however, and while the interim report was submitted according to schedule, its status was ultimately changed following acceptance from that of interim report to mitigation plan. As a consequence, almost one-half of the area surveyed will have been successfully mitigated prior to the completion of this reprint. A further complication is the fact that a second interim mitigation plan encompassing two and one-half miles of the Waterway channel in the southern portion of the survey area was also requested and subsequently submitted.

It should be immediately obvious therefore, that the final recommendations presented here do not mirror precisely the research and salvage design that could have been developed had recommendations for the entire survey area been prepared and presented simultaneously.
