An Initial Cultural Resources Assessment (Revised) and Intensive Survey of the Phase I Construction Area of the Fort Dix Sanitary Landfill Site, U.S. Army Training Center, Fort Dix Military Reservation, Pemberton Township, Burlington County, New Jersey

Summary

An initial cultural resources assessment was conducted for the Fort Dix Sanitary Landfill Site, Fort Dix Military Reservation, Pemberton Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. The project study area consists of approximately 126 acres, including an existing 76 acre landfill and surrounding 50 acres. The landfill is on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's National Priority List and is scheduled for remedial closure. Remediation activities will be conducted within the existing landfill and the surrounding 50 acres.

The initial cultural resources assessment was focused on the 50 acre area around the existing landfill. Because of the potential hazards to human health, the existing landfill was not assessed. Complementary to the initial assessment activities, an intensive field survey was conducted for the Phase I construction area, where office trailers, employee parking and a truck wash facility will be constructed.

A literature and records search was conducted at the Office of New Jersey Heritage, New Jersey State Library, New Jersey State Museum and the Pinelands Commission. No cultural resources on the National or State Register of Historic Places are located within the project area; however, one such site, the Benjamin Jones House complex, is located 500 feet south of the project area.

No further work is recommended within the Phase I construction area. However, based on the literature review and initial reconnaissance findings, there is the potential for cultural resources to occur within the Phase II construction area. For this reason, a Stage II cultural resources survey is recommended for Phase II construction areas. Because of potential human health hazards and severe physical disturbance, no cultural resources work is recommended for the existing 76 acre landfill.
