Archaeological Monitoring For the Fire Hydrant Installation (South) Project in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Michael Stubing

Year: 2011

Summary

The project consists of the installation of fire hydrants within three separate locations designated Areas 1, 2, and 3. The COP Archaeology Office reviewed this project and provided recommendations in a February 25, 2008 Archaeological Assessment Form. The COP Archaeology Assessment notes that portions of two archaeological sites (AZ T:12:224 [ASM]/Phoenix Street Railway and AZ T:12:412 [ASM]/Casa Chica/P:2:2 [GP]), prehistoric canals, the La Hacienda Historic District, and historic structures are plotted within the project area. The COP Archaeology Office recommended that monitoring be conducted for all portions of the project area that are located within AZ T:12:412 (ASM)/Casa Chica/P:2:2 (GP) or within 250 ft. of its known boundaries, within the location of AZ T:12:224 (ASM)/Phoenix Street Railway, and within 50 ft. of the plotted location of prehistoric canals. It was also recommended that the COP Street Transportation Department contact the COP Historic Preservation Office (CHPO) due to the presence of the historic district and historic structures. Monitoring was conducted within Areas 1 and 2; monitoring was not required within Area 3, as no ground disturbance was conducted within or near archaeologically sensitive areas. In a March 4, 2008 Historic Assessment Request the CHPO requested project plans, but did not require specific mitigation.

No prehistoric or historic features were found within the excavated trenches as a result of the monitoring. If any future subsurface disturbance should be necessary at these locations, archaeological monitoring should be conducted due to the potential for subsurface cultural deposits. If any previously unidentified cultural resources are encountered during subsequent ground-disturbing activities at this location, all activities should cease in the immediate area of the discovery and the COP Archaeology Office should be contacted. Ground disturbing activities should not resume until the COP Archaeology Office has been provided time to properly assess the discovery.
