From the Desert to the Mountains: Archaeology of the Transition Zone, The State Route 87–Sycamore Creek Project, Volume 2: Analysis of Prehistoric Remains

Summary

This document is the second of four volumes presenting the results of a two-phase data recovery program conducted by Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), at 29 prehistoric sites and segments of 2 historical-period roads—Reno Road and the old Bush Highway—along a 25-mile-long segment of State Route 87 (SR 87, or the Beeline Highway), between Saguaro Lake Road and the Gila County Line. A fourth volume presents the findings of a study of the historical-period roads within the project area performed by Archaeological Consulting Services (ACS). The investigations were undertaken under contract with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) because of anticipated impacts to cultural resources located within the right-of-way of the proposed realignment and widening of the highway segment.

Located in northeastern Maricopa County, within the administrative boundaries of the Tonto National Forest (TNF), the project area includes a parcel of private land near Sunflower. The project corridor runs roughly parallel to Sycamore Creek and transects the Transition Zone from the low desert, northeast of the Phoenix Basin, to the Mazatzal Mountains, along upper Tonto Basin and Payson Basin. As such, Sycamore Creek presents a microcosm of the rich environmental diversity of the Transition Zone.

The chapters in this volume contain analyses of the primary material culture classes—ceramics, flaked and ground stone, bone, and shell—along with examinations of environmental data such as pollen, macrobotanical, and faunal remains. Along with these studies, Volume 2 contains chapters examining the agricultural potential of a probable prehistoric field site and an analysis of the excavated human remains. The data that form the foundation of these studies are presented in the appendices to the volume.
