Results of Cultural Resource Monitoring for the George Gervin Prep Academy Project, Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona

Author(s): Kristin L. Fangmeier

Year: 2012

Summary

At the request of Ms. Alissa Tarkington of the George Gervin Prep Academy (GGPA) and Peter Hemingway of Wood/Patel, Archaeological Consulting Services, Ltd. (ACS) conducted archaeological monitoring of ground disturbing activities during construction of the George Gervin Youth Center on private land in Phoenix, Maricopa County, Arizona. In the Archaeological Assessment report prepared by the City Archaeology Office (CAO) for this project, which was dated March 5, 2012, it was noted that the project area includes a portion of Las Canopas, AZ T:12:137(ASM), a prehistoric habitation with human remains. The CAO recommended testing be conducted within the site as well as a 250-ft buffer; because construction had already begun, it was also recommended that monitoring be conducted where construction trenches had already been placed.

Kristin Fangmeier and Melanie Ryan of ACS conducted a site visit with City Archaeologist Laurene Montero on March 6, 2012, and observed that significant ground disturbance had already taken place—the parcel had been bladed down several feet and then the soils were replaced and compacted in layers, and drainage basins and foundation footers had already been excavated. The existing surface of the parcel as well as backdirt piles were inspected for evidence of cultural deposits (artifacts, bone discolored soil, ash, etc.), and none was found. Due to the extent of prior disturbance and lack of evidence for cultural remains, testing was not warranted and only monitoring of remaining construction activities in previously undisturbed areas was necessary. ACS’ archaeological monitoring of project construction activities took place between March 8 and April 28, 2012. No significant cultural resources were identified.
