Summary

This report presents the results of Phase 1 data recovery at 13 archaeological sites along the proposed right-of-way for the Punkin Center Section of State Route 188. The Punkin Center Section is one part of a multi-year Arizona Department of Transportation project to realign and improve a 29-km long portion of SR 188, the principal road passing through the Tonto Basin, Gila County, Arizona. The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration and occurs on Arizona Department of Transportation right-of-way across Tonto National Forest lands. The 13 investigated sites include three largely Preclassic sites, AZ U:3:294 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1362; AZ U:3:352 (ASM) /AR-03-12-06-2284; AZ U:3:298 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1368; six largely Classic period sites, AZ U:3:5 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-126; AZ U:3:289 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-2283; AZ U:3:297 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-332; AZ U:3:299 (ASM)/ AR-03-12-06-199; AZ U:3:300 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1365; and AZ U:3:301 (ASM)/AR-03-12- 06-1366; and four historic period sites, AZ U:3:290 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1377; AZ U:3:291 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1378; AZ U:3:296 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06 1381; and AZ U:3:302 (ASM)/AR-03- 12-06-1387. Three additional prehistoric sites originally scheduled for investigation were found to lie completely outside the proposed right-of-way, AZ U:3:292 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1358; AZ U:3:293 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1360; and AZ U:3:295 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1361.

This report presents the general environmental setting of the project area, and briefly describes the history of archaeological research in the vicinity of Punkin Center. The individual sites are treated separately—the field methods employed at each particular site are presented, the features and deposits discovered are considered, and the artifact assemblage is described. The initial results are evaluated, and recommendations for further work are presented for eight sites: AZ U:3:5 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-126; AZ U:3:289 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-2283; AZ U:3:294 (ASM)/AR-03- 12-06-1362; AZ U:3:296 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1381; AZ U:3:297 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-332; AZ U:3:298 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1368; AZ U:3:299 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-199; and AZ U:3:301 (ASM)/AR-03-12-06-1366. A research design is presented to guide the Phase 2 data recovery investigations at these sites, along with a plan of work.
