Petrographic Analysis of Sherds for the MCDOT Pueblo Blanco Excavation Project

Author(s): Elizabeth Miksa

Year: 1995

Summary

This report contains the description of data collection procedures and analysis methods for petrographic thin sections of potsherds recovered from the MCDOT Pueblo Blanco project near Scottsdale, Arizona. Fifty-three plainware, redware, polychrome, and buffware sherds from AZ U:9:95 (ASM) and AZ U:9:97 (ASM) were analyzed. In addition, five polychrome sherds from AZ U:15:3 (ASM) were analyzed for comparison with the Pueblo Blanco polychrome sherds.

The type of analysis employed for this project involved description and point counting of petrographic thin sections of sherds. The goal of the analysis was to characterize the temper in the sherds, and to separate local from non-local tempers. Non-local tempers were identified to their source or potential source if known. To aid in the identification of local versus non-local materials, the sand temper materials in the sherds were compared to thin sections of 20 sand samples taken from the McDowell Mountains and their adjacent alluvial fans. These reference samples were provided by Northland Research, Inc.
