An International Mortuary Monument Recording System - From Site Analysis to International Comparative Studies

Author(s): Harold Mytum

Year: 2020

Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "Mortuary Monuments and Archaeology: Current Research" , at the 2020 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

The Council for British Archaeology system (Mytum 2000) of recording memorials has been updated and expanded to cope with many international contexts. This paper outlines the principles of the recording system, and the ways in which data can be digitally archived, a challenge for many graveyard and cemetery projects thus far. The proposed data capture protocols are being shared freely with all interested researchers by free downloads of recording forms and support documentation. The recording system has been utilised by CRM firms, community groups of avocational archaeologists, and University students. The paper will conclude with examples of the author’s site-based and international comparative studies using the recorded data that indicate the advantages of using a standardised recording system.
