Cultural Properties Survey of Allied Signal Aerospace/Kirtland Operations Compound on Kirtland Air Force Base, NC-135 Area, Bernalillo County, New Mexico

Summary

On August 1, 1995, Tamara S. Jager of Keystone Environmental and Planning, Inc. completed a cultural properties survey of a portion of the AlliedSignal Aerospace facility on Kirtland Air Force Base (KAFB), NC-135 area, in the City of Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The survey covered approximately 12 hectares (29 acres) of the 16-hectare (39.5-acre) facility. A check of the New Mexico Cultural Resource Management Information System (NMCRIS) revealed three previously recorded sites within an area defined as the project vicinity (a 1.6-km [1-mile] radius of the facility). None of the sites are within the limits of the facility.

The Albuquerque Veterans Administration Medical Center Historic District is currently listed on the State Register of Cultural Properties and on the National Register of Historic Places (HPD #926) and is within the vicinity of the facility. Portions of the historic district can be seen from the facility; however, the general setting of the district is urbanized and would not be physically or visually affected by current or planned uses of the facility.

No archaeological sites were identified within the limits of the facility. One isolated archaeological occurrence was documented. The information potential of the isolated occurrence is considered to have been exhausted by field recording. No further archaeological studies are recommended for this project. If any cultural remains are encountered during future work within the facility, work in that area should be halted and the appropriate authorities should be notified.
