Summary

This is an abstract from the session entitled "What’s in a Name? Discussions of Terminology, Theory and Infrastructure of Citizen Science in Maritime Archaeology" , at the 2022 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology.

Inclusion in any process builds relationships that can fortify appreciation for and strengthen connection to important resources and stories. Offering opportunities, where and when appropriate for inclusion in research and data collection helps build interest and understanding in your mission and goals. Establishing serious commitment is paramount, volunteer projects often fall apart without structure and dedication on both sides. Providing regular opportunities and scheduling participation creates a strong volunteer foundation. Provided however, that there is job specific training established for the project or task. Organizations like Diving With a Purpose (DWP) have been successful for these reasons. Collaboration between agencies and advocates in development of training and data collection compliments the support of underwater archaeological projects and offers inclusion for everyone. The DWP archaeology program is a model for success.
