Summary

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, is proposing to construct additional shore protection in southern Brevard County, Florida. A single borrow area (Space Coast Shoals II) and a sand re-handling area (South Reach Sand Rehandling Area) will be utilized during the proposed project. To insure that no significant shipwrecks or other archaeological resources are adversely effected by the planned offshore shore protection project, the Jacksonville District contracted Mid-Atlantic Technology and Environmental Research, Inc. (M-AT/ER) of Castle Hayne, North Carolina, to conduct a literature search and archaeological survey to identify any submerged cultural resources in areas effected by the project.

The archaeological survey included a marine remote sensing survey using a marine magnetometer and side-scan sonar to identify any submerged cultural resources within the proposed borrow areas. M-AT/ER conducted historical research and field investigations for the project between 30 July and 3 November 2001.

No magnetic or acoustic targets were identified in either the Space Coast Shoals II or the South Reach Re-handling Area. No additional investigations or mitigation were recommended.
