Phase I Cultural Resource Investigations of the Proposed Expansion of Scott Air Force Base, St. Clair County, Illinois

Summary

The proposed expansion of the Scott Air Force Base in St. Clair County, Illinois to include domestic air transportation was the impetus for a reconnaissance survey to locate and identify cultural resources that may be impacted by construction. The Study area encompassed approximately 3,700 acres of land that would potentially impact the proposed runway additions, associated terminal and apron developments, additional property acquisitions, and realignment of Illinois Highway 4. An Archaeological Survey involving pedestrian reconnaissance and shovel testing was conducted resulting in the identification of 90 prehistoric and historic sites and 19 prehistoric isolated finds. This report summarizes the results of the survey, and significance of the identified cultural resources, and recommends a program for future investigations prior to the construction of the facility.
