Archaeological Monitoring of Pole Replacement at Salt River Project Structures CP-25 and CP-28 for the Goldfield-Silver King 230kV Project within AZ U:10:49 (ASM)/AZ U:10:2 (BLM), Apache Junction, Maricopa County, Arizona

Summary

This technical memo presents the results of archaeological monitoring by Logan Simpson Design during the installation of Salt River Project (SRP) poles at stations CP-25 and CP-28 along the Goldfield-Silver King 230 kV transmission line within the boundary of AZ U:10:49 (ASM)/AZ U:10:2 (BLM). Because the construction site is located on land administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the project is considered an undertaking as defined under 36 CFR § 800 (as revised in 2004), the regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The excavations, existing pole removal, and monitoring were completed on September 17, 2009. The poles being replaced were wooden; their poor condition necessitated their replacement with steel poles. One of the poles was near failure and required temporary support while the new poles were being installed. Prior to the excavations, the area was inspected for the presence of any archaeological features or artifacts. SRP vehicles used the existing access roads to enter the area and conduct the work. In one instance, at the CP-28 location, the truck delivering poles was forced to leave the established roadway. However, prior to its maneuvering, the area was inspected to assure no features or artifacts were present; none were.
