Phase II Historical and Archaeological Investigations of 30 Archaeological Sites, Fort Lee (FL1996.001)

Summary

As part of its responsibilities under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, as amended, Fort Lee, located in Prince George County, Virginia, has undertaken a program of archaeological survey and testing to inventory the National Register-eligible archaeological resources in its possession. This report presents the final stage of this program. Phase II investigations of 30 sites within Fort Lee. The work described in this report was completed by Gray & Pape, Inc., Richmond, Virginia, on behalf of J.M. Waller, Burke, Virginia. Fort Lee was the sponsoring agency for this work.

These Phase II investigations included historical research, archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analysis. The goals of this work included the establishment of chains of title for historic archaeological sites. In addition, archaeological fieldwork and analysis focused on determining site boundaries, chronological association of sites, site function, stratigraphic contexts, and site integrity. The Phase II fieldwork involved the examination of 24.57 hectares (60.72 acres). Based on this testing program, nine of the 30 sites (Sites 44PG160, 44PG164, 44PG180, 44PG186, 44PG195, 44PG196, 44PG197, 44PG208, and 44PG255) are recommended I as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places under Criterion D (research value). These sites should be protected from on-going or planned undertakings at Fort Lee.

This project contains the official report of the archaeological investigations carried out for the thirty sites located at Fort Lee, Virginia.
