Semi-Annual Technical Report, July 2009, Fort A.P. Hill (AP 2012.001)

Summary

The Fort A.P. Hill Cultural Resource Manager, under the Environmental Division of the Directorate of Public Works within Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia, completed Phase I archaeological survey in association with proposed forestry activities in seven forestry blocks located in Training Areas 7, 11, 15, 16, 18, and 23, Fort A.P. Hill, Caroline County, Virginia. The proposed forestry activities consist of seven prescribed burns (Burns 07-C-FY08, 11-A-FY08, 15-A-FY08, 16-A-FY08, 18-A FY08, 18-A-FY09, and 23-B-FY08). The Project Area consists of approximately 1,045 hectares (2,582.1 acres) of forestland, divided between two Virginia Department of Historic Resources file numbers (2008-0110 and 2009-0110). Six forestry areas, covering 951.5 hectares (2351.1 acres), are associated with VDHR File Number 2008-0110. The remaining forestry area is associated with VDHR File Number 2009-0110 and represents a 93.5-hectare (231-acre) extension to a previous forestry area.

The objective of the archaeological survey was to identify any historic properties that may be located within the proposed forestry blocks and evaluate the potential eligibility of any such resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Fifteen previously recorded archaeological sites (44CE0061, 44CE0132, 44CE0382, 44CE0383, 44CE387, 44CE0388, 44CE0389, 44CE0390, 44CE0401, 44CE0402, 44CE0403, 44CE0404, 44CE0409, 44CE0479, and 44CE0526) and nine previously unrecorded archaeological sites (44CE0615 through 44CE0623) were identified within the Project Area.

Seven sites are recommended not eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and 16 sites are recommended potentially eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. One site (44CE0402) has been previously recommended eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. While sites 44CE0404, 44CE0621, and 44CE0622 will be flagged and avoided during proposed forestry activities, none of the remaining archaeological sites will be avoided during the proposed activities.

This project include a report, photo log and photographs from the survey.
