Salamonie Reservoir Survey 1982

Summary

An archaeological survey of the Salamonie Reservoir was carried out by principal investigators William R. Wepler and Donald R. Cochran, from Ball State University in 1982. Salamonie Reservoir is located in the Huntington and Wabash counties of Indiana. The survey was conducted to identify the variables that influenced site selection, refine the cultural history of the area, develop hypotheses concerning Early Archaic settlement patterns, investigate the seeming lack of Middle Archaic occupation of the area, and to evaluate the effect the reservoir had on the archaeological resources (Wepler and Cochran 1982).

The report by Wepler and Cochran (1982) does not give definitive dates for when the survey at the Salamonie Reservoir took place. The 1982 investigation year comes from the date on the report. No dates of collection were found while processing this investigation, except for one that falls outside of the 1982 year, March 1980. This date was associated with seven artifacts (Artifact IDs: 004-001 to 004-003). Because the site number associated with this date, 12HU68, was listed on a box list obtained from AAL, it was decided to keep the artifacts associated with it in the investigation. The decision was made not to change the investigation name or years of investigation, due to the lack of evidence in the archives to help determine when the survey took place.

The digital materials in this project were processed by the Veterans Curation Program (VCP), and include the artifact database, artifact report, finding aid, scanned asset key, and select artifact photographs. Additional digital materials held by the VCP include additional artifact photographs, box labels, document folder listing, initial data sheets, and notes. For additional information on these materials, refer to the Finding Aid.
