Maner-Garnett House, Webb Wildlife Management Area 1996
Summary
New South Associates, Inc., as sub-consultant to Gulf South Research Corporation, conducted the excavation at Maner-Garnett House, Webb Wildlife Management Area, on July 16 and 17, 1996. The property is part of the “Westvaco” or “Palachucola” tract of the Webb Management Area which was acquired by USACE, Savannah District as part of the Richard B. Russell Reservoir mitigation project. Overseen by Principal Investigator Dr. J. W. Joseph, the goal of this archaeological investigation was to locate any resources within the immediate vicinity of the main structure which might be impacted during the asbestos removal on the porch roof and to determine the nature of potential artifact deposits. The Maner-Garnett House was identified as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) during a Phase I cultural resources investigation (Hayward and Starr 1995; Joseph 1996). The current abandoned structure is a late nineteenth-century, two-story frame residence located within a larger farming complex. In addition to the main house, the site includes a modern one-story “camphouse,” a small barn, and the burned remains of six outbuildings. The house is considered eligible for the NRHP due to its association with John King Garnett Sr., who was an important capitalist influential in the development of the area. The final report is present and it summarizes the results of the architectural documentation and archaeological evaluation of the Maner-Garnett House in Hampton County, South Carolina.
