Large Game, Agricultural Land, and Settlement Pattern Change in the Eastern Mimbres Area, Southwest New Mexico (2011)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Karen Schollmeyer.

The 12th-century depopulation of large villages in the Mimbres region of the US Southwest has been attributed to a number of causes, including resource stress. This study combines archaeological evidence and models of environmental conditions in the eastern Mimbres area of southwest New Mexico to assess the magnitude and timing of food stress from a combination of a period of reduced precipitation and the effects of prolonged hunting and farming activities on the landscape. Results indicate that...

A Late Archaic Occupation at AZ AA:12:105 (ASM) (1990)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Jonathan B. Mabry.

In August, 1990, archaeologists from Desert Archaeology, Inc. monitored the excavation of a water pipeline trench through the northeastern edge of a multiple-occupation archaeological site sitting upon and buried within an alluvial fan at the western edge of the Santa Cruz River terrace. Several prehistoric cultural features in a buried occupation horizon were identified. Mesquite wood charcoal from the floor of a pithouse yielded a conventional radiocarbon date of 3040 ± 1 1 0 B.P. (radiocarbon...

Late Prehistoric and Ethnohistoric Pinyon Exploitation in South-Central Nevada: A Case from the Belted Range, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada (2012)
DOCUMENT Full-Text William R. Hildebrandt. Daron Duke.

A Section 110 archaeological characterization inventory of the Belted Range was conducted for Nellis Air Force Base by Far Western in the latter half of 2010. The focus of the study was on identifying patterning that could inform current research on the prehistoric exploitation of singleleaf pinyon. The survey identified 64 sites (62 prehistoric, 2 historic-period) within a total of 1,798 acres. We find that the Belted Range pinyon zone is much like those throughout the region that contain...

Late Prehistoric Life Along Laprele Creek: Evidence for Broad Spectrum Hunting and Gathering at 48CO2672 (2003)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Kelly J. Pool.

In the summer of 2001, Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. (MAC) excavated a deeply buried campsite (48C02672) along LaPrele Creek in Converse County, Wyoming. Charcoal from two hearths produced conventional radiocarbon ages of 1200 ± 60 BP and 1100 ± 60 BP. The cultural level dates to the Late Prehistoric period (Frison 1991), and results suggest at least two and as many as four use episodes may be represented. During these use episodes, there appears to have been an emphasis on plant...

Late Woodland Zea Mays at the Vintroux Site, Putnam County, West Virginia (1993)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Charles M. Niquette. Gary D. Crites.

The contents of a freshly plowed out feature at the Vintroux site (46PU69) produced cultural materials diagnostic of the late Late Woodland period. A pair of radiocarbon dates obtained from the feature were consistent with the artifacts recovered. Significantly, the feature also produced over 33 grams of Zea mays. The maize is described and metric attributes are presented. The single feature at Vintroux produced a greater quantity and better preserved maize than has been recovered from all other...
