Excavations in the Southern Avra Valley: Results of the SAVSARP Project (2009)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Uploaded by: Rachel Fernandez

The Southern Avra Valley Storage and Recovery Project (SAVSARP) project examined three sites, AZ AA:16:312 (ASM), AZ AA:16:468 (ASM), and AZ AA:16:469 (ASM), and a non-site artifact concentration, Locality A, on the floor of the Avra Valley. The surface manifestations of the sites mirrored those of other sites in the valley bottom, low-density artifact scatters covering broad expanses. Locales of higher artifact density were defined as archaeological sites, but surface artifacts continued...

Freshwater Mussel Identification and Analysis from the River Bend Site, 48NA202 (2005)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Kerry Lippincott.

The subject of freshwater mussels in Wyoming archaeology is of more importance than might first appear and seems not to have been recognized by students of Wyoming archaeology. A significant body of data exists concerning mussels’ biological description, ecology, and relationships as well as the archaeological identification and prehistoric cultural connections of mussels. The following draws on those data and applies it to an example of Wyoming’s archaeologically recovered mussels from the...

Generalized and Specialized Resource Utilization During the Archaic Period: Implications of the Koster Site Faunal Record (1986)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Sarah W. Neusius.

Abstract - Traditionally, changes in niche breadth during the Archaic period have been depicted as involving a shift from specialized resource use during the Early Archaic to a more generalized resource use by the Middle Archaic. The faunal record from the Early and Middle Archaic levels of the Koster site does not support this scenario. Evaluation of the Koster case suggests that some modification to common assumptions about the determinants of niche breadth is in order. Not only should the...

A Glimpse at the Archaeological Landscape of Black Mountain and Upper Thirsty Canyon, Nevada Test and Training Range, Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada (2006)
DOCUMENT Full-Text Jeffrey Altschul. Michael K. Lerch. Kathleen L. Hull. Margaret Beck. Robert M. Wegener. Richard W. Arnold.

An archaeological research and characterization study of 1,275 acres in nine survey units in the Black Mountain area of the Nellis Air Force Base (NAFB) Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) was conducted by Statistical Research, Inc. The Grass Creek Site (48HO120): A Middle Archaic Period Housepit, Hot Springs County, Wyoming (1993)
DOCUMENT Full-Text David Reiss. David Eckles. Karin M. Guernsey. Michael McFaul. William R. Doering.

The Grass Creek (48HO120) site is a multicomponent prehistoric site preserved within an alluvial terrace on Grass Creek in north-central Wyoming. The principal component of the site is a housepit (Feature 31) with artifacts dating to the Middle Plains Archaic Period. Faunal and floral analysis suggests small mammals and certain plant taxa were used as food sources and prepared within the housepit. The lithic analysis suggests that tool maintenance or final tool production occurred within the...

Hunter-Gatherer Canid Petroglyphs in the Wind River and Bighorn Basins of Wyoming (2001)
DOCUMENT Full-Text James J. Stewart.

Big game, large bird, and canid (dog/wolf/coyote) figures are the most obvious zoomorph petroglyph motifs in the Bighorn and Wind River Basins. Canid petroglyph motifs, with many apparently dating 2000-6000 B.P., or possibly older, tend to prevail in specific areas of the southern Bighorn and northeastern Wind River Basins. The geographic distribution of these canid motifs appears to be more than coincidental. Examination of known/recorded Wind River and Bighorn Basin canid motif petroglyph...
